Poverty Alleviation is one of the major themes of the District this year. As part of the collaboration between Rotary and Hong Kong Council of Social Services in tackling poverty, Rotary Club of the Peak has sponsored Habitat for Humanity for launching its “Under No Roof” project on June 22nd. Habitat for Humanity is an international NGO dedicated to eliminating poverty in housing. Since 1976, Habitat has built and renovated 500,000 homes and provided an estimated 2.5 million people in 100 countries with safe, decent and affordable shelter.
The “Under No Roof” project will take place on June 22 -23 at the Po Leung Kuk Jockey Club Tai Tong Holiday Camp in Yuen Long. This project encourages the public to experience homelessness by spending a night outdoor. Through games, group tasks and disaster simulations, participants can experience the needs and helplessness of homeless people, reflect upon their values in life and take action to help the people in need.
Habitat for Humanity has already approached over 200 schools and they have very positive feedback. Starting from this week, there will be 270 posters being posted in all MTR stations to promote this event. Participants can join this event either as individual/family/team (up to 10 people). Housing needs in Hong Kong has always been a big social issue. “Under No Roof” will definitely help raise awareness of the plights facing the homeless. It will also be quite a special experience spending one night outdoor with your friends and family.
Please help promote this event by sending the information to your fellow Rotarians, Rotaract and Interact Clubs.
