Dear AGs and DAGs of Area 2-8, CDS, DSs and DDSs,

I am writing to invite you to a press conference which RID 3450 will host on 3rd Sept 2014 to launch the campaign for finding THE ONE HK.

As you are aware, while the international competition of THE ONE founded by PDG David Harilela has been highly successful in promoting humanitarian work worldwide and the Rotary image, we have not had any Hong Kong candidate reaching even the semi-final stage in the past three years.  To resolve this, we are launching THE ONE HK with the objective of looking solely for THE HK version of THE ONE with the same high qualifications.    It is hoped that through this initiative, we could accentuate the goodness within society by recognizing that special humanitarian who truly personifies Hong Kong’s heroic spirit, thus helping to re-unite and re-energize Hong Kong. By doing this we will also be helping promote what Rotary is doing in HK and attract more potential members to join us.

I am most honored to have been invited by PDG David to be the Chairman of THE ONE HK project, and am most grateful that DG Belinda has given this project her full support.

The unsung hero winning THE ONE HK award will be honored with a trophy and a monetary award of HK$100,000, which is to be used to further his/her charitable cause.  We have secured a separate sponsor specifically for this Award and this is the Chainrai Foundation which has agreed to donate HK$100,000 to our winner annually.

The winner of THE ONE HK award will automatically qualify to join the semi-final round of THE ONE international (where the winner of THE ONE international will be awarded US$100,000 and each finalist will be awarded US$50,000 for furthering their charitable causes).

We are inviting everyone in Hong Kong to make nominations.  The nominator of the Winner will also be honored by a monetary award of HK$5,000 which will be donated to an approved charitable organization or a Rotary Club in Hong Kong as specified by the nominator.  Nominations will last until 31st January 2015.

The press conference will take place during 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Monaco Room of the Regal Hong Kong Hotel, 88 Yee Wo Street, Causeway Bay.  Reception and registration will commence at 4:30 p.m.

I am pleased that Dr. Ko Wing-man, Secretary for Food & Health, has kindly agreed to be the Officiating Guest for the launch of the project and to address the audience at the press conference.

As leaders of our District, your presence at the press conference will be a great encouragement and your support will be of paramount importance to ensure the success of the project.

The project will also be supported by many of our close partners, in particular service organisations in Hong Kong.  These include for instance the Hong Kong Council of Social Service, the YMCA, the Junior Chamber International Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Association of the Physically Handicapped and Able Bodied.  We trust that with the concerted efforts of the community, we will be able to identify our unsung heroes and pick the Winner.
