RC of HK South – Photos to Share on the MORE Service Project
A few of us attended a basketball match last Wednesday and would like to share a few photos and video shots with you. But, the significance is not in the basketball match itself……… MORE on this below.
“MORE” (standing for Motivation, Options, Rapport and Esteem) is an on-going project, a Rotarian Service to Community, that our Club has been supporting since last year. Through working with the Salvation Army’s Youth Integrated Service, we have been helping a group of marginalized youths by engaging them in a program of activities to steer them away from the undesired and help them regain their self-esteem and find a purpose in life. Under the guidance of a dedicated social worker, some of these youngsters form themselves into a basketball team. It is heartening to learn from these youngsters themselves that after a year of coaching and training together, what they’ve learned is not just basketball skills, but the way to work with other people and also the realization that achievement (big or small) in life does not come easily but takes dedication and efforts.
Last Wednesday was a big day for them because they got to play the professional players from the Hong Kong Basketball League (Division 1). You will see in a couple of photos here these professional players having a “sharing” session with the youngsters before the match. The sharing was not on basketball techniques and skills, but their own youth experience (at times in equally difficult situation as these youngsters) and the importance of a good education in shaping their own career path etc..
For the Group Photo taken on the court, see if you could spot the Rotarians from the group. Answer at the end of this email.
