The Rotary International District 3450 Joint Luncheon Meeting was held on 28th April 2014 at Regal Hong Kong Hotel.  Chief Secretary of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Mrs. Carrie Lam, GBS, JP was invited to talk on the consultation for the methods for selecting the Chief Executive in 2017 and for Forming the Legislative Council in 2016. This is an initiative of District Governor Eugene Fong to invite our Rotarians to look into and voice out our view with the political reform.  The consultation principle of the Government is in line with our Rotary core value – Diversity and Peace.  The title we set for the talk is「廣納多元,共建大同. It was well attended and the hall can only take up 258 Rotarians from 41 clubs attended.

Mrs. Lam shared her finding for the past 5 months of public consultation.  She threw in a new slogan for the consultation in the final stage as“畀條路嚟行吓得唔得呀?”

Mrs. Lam shared some of the ideas she learnt from a book she recently read “Getting to Yes – Negotiating Agreement without Giving In”.  She mentioned the first principle in arriving the agreement at the constitutional reform is “focus on interests, not positions”; “Attack the problem, not the people”.

The wish of the general public is to have progress with the political reform and she will try to get to universal suffrage among different political parties and interest group.

During the Questions and commenting session, a number of our Rotarians expressed their opinion including the wish to involve the university students in the election committee.

The meeting ended at 2pm and everyone enjoyed the talk, food and fellowship very much.

I would like to thank the organizing committee: Co-vice Chairman AG Heman Lam (Rotary Club of Hong Kong Island East) and AG Andy Li (Rotary Club of Kwai Chung), District Public Image team Chairman PDG David Harilela, Deputy Chair Albert Chan and Vice Chari PP Suzie from Rotary Club of Wanchai, President Francis Au from Rotary Club of Tai Po, Past President Joyce Mak from Rotary Club of Kingspark and Past President Frederick Ng from Rotary Club of New Territories.

I hereby would like to attach some news clippings for your reference.
